Leighlin followed up on their first win last week with another tonight
at Ballinaboley, against last years championship finalists Palatine.
Pal started brightly with Chris Bermingham and veteran Niall Reid
popping over scores inside two minutes.
Dean Collins hit back for Leighlin but Pal added three more points,
with Reid and Pakie O Toole influential in all three.
Adrian Dermody got a badly needed point for Leighlin after a
great turnover by Ciaran Casey in the build up.
Minutes later Dermody finished to the net only for
referee strangely Brian Deering called back the play for a penalty.
Val Fleming stepped up and put the ball away but Leighlin still
trailed by 0-7 to 1-2 at the break.
Fleming was called upon again for another penalty five minutes
into the 2nd half and converted a carbon copy of his first effort,
giving Leighlin the lead for the first time.
Fleming and Brian Kavanagh added further scores, but Pakie
O Toole kept Pal in touch with the score at 2-4 to 0-9 with
15 minutes left.
However Leighlin hit a purple patch and Keith Lillis, Kavanagh and
Fleming streched the lead to four points, and in fairness Pal
responded with three of their own but Leighlin held out
by the narrowest of margin’s on a 2-7 to 0-12 scoreline,
with full back Val Fleming finishing with a tally of 2-2.
